FORT LEONARD WOOD, Missouri

Today, MPRA awarded Retired Command Sgt. Maj. James Breckinridge the Order of the Marechaussee in Gold for his dedication to service and enduring commitment to the Military Police Corps.

This award, established in 2000 with Gold, Silver, and Bronze, levels of recognition, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon an MP Soldier. It recognizes exceptional dedication, competence, and contribution to the Military Corps Regiment. To date, MPRA has only awarded 163 OoM in Gold (including Hall of Fame inductees retroactively).

Acknowledging this award’s significance, Breckinridge noted, “The Order of Marechaussee in Gold is one of the most prestigious honors within the Military Police Corps Regiment, and receiving it is incredibly humbling…this honor reinforces my lifelong dedication to the Corp.”

An MP career spanning over 30 years

Breckinridge’s Army career began in 1989, spanned over 30 years, and shaped him into the man he is today.

“The Army shaped me in every possible way—professionally, personally, and as a leader. From the moment I enlisted, the Army instilled in me the values of discipline, resilience, and selfless service. It provided me with opportunities to grow, face challenges head-on, and develop a leadership philosophy centered on accountability, integrity, and taking care of people.”

The highlight of James’ career was serving as the 13th Regimental Command Sergeant Major of the Military Police Corps.  His contributions during this time allowed his Soldiers to remain adaptable and successful no matter the circumstance.

“In this role, I had the honor of shaping the future of the Military Police Corps by influencing doctrine, training, and professional development, ensuring that our Soldiers remained adaptive, resilient, and ready to meet the evolving challenges of military policing and force protection. It was an opportunity to uphold the traditions and legacy of the Regiment while also driving innovation to meet the Army’s needs.”

The Army recognized James’ commitment to serve through a multitude of personal and unit awards, namely, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal, and the OoM in Bronze and Silver. But to James, those awards do not represent his greatest professional achievement; instead, when asked, James noted that serving as the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood Command Sergeant Major is the role that brings him the most pride.

“This role allowed me to directly impact not only the Military Police Corps but also the broader Army training enterprise. Leading and mentoring thousands of Soldiers, ensuring the highest standards of professionalism, readiness, and leadership development, was an immense responsibility and privilege. It reinforced my belief in the importance of strong leadership, mentorship, and a commitment to excellence in all aspects of military service.”

The importance and influence of mentors

He credits his own mentors as guiding him past his perceived limitations.

“They held me accountable, pushed me beyond my limits, and instilled in me the mindset that leadership is a lifelong commitment, not just a position. Their influence is something I carry with me every day, and I strive to pass on their lessons to the next generation of leaders.”

His advice to the next generation of leaders further emphasizes his belief in the invaluable relationship between mentor and mentee, and the importance of selfless leadership.

“Seek out mentors, take advantage of every training opportunity, and always strive to be the best at your craft. The Army will give you the tools, but it’s up to you to use them. Lead from the front, even when no one is watching,” he said.

As a Soldier for Life, Breckinridge continues to live by the MP Corps motto, “Assist, Protect, Defend.”

“These three words are more than just a motto; they represent the core mission and identity of every MP Soldier, shaping our role on the battlefield, in law enforcement, and in support of our fellow Soldiers and communities.”

In addition to this motto, James’s personal motto and leadership philosophy, RRP—”Relationships, Reputation, and Performance”—has guided his career, beliefs, and actions.

“Relationships are the foundation of leadership and success; reputation is built over time through integrity, professionalism, and how we treat others; and performance is the measure of our commitment and excellence.”

Together these words and the MP motto have helped him navigate every challenge, earn trust, and make a lasting impact as evidence by his many accolades and meritorious career.

MPRA’s commitment to the MP Corps

Post military retirement, James continues to promote the Army and the MP Corp through serving in organizations like MPRA and other military-based nonprofits. When asked how MPRA has supported him, he shared,

“MPRA has provided a network of professionals who share a deep commitment to the Military Police Corps. Through professional development opportunities, recognition programs, and advocacy, MPRA has helped strengthen the bonds within our Regiment and ensure that MPs—past and present—are honored for their service.”

When not serving others, James enjoys spending time with his family, wife, Carolyn, and daughter, Sydney, and watching his favorite war movie, To Hell and Back.
